California Traffic Laws

The rules of the road every California driver is held to.

California traffic law lives in the California Vehicle Code. Division 11, titled Rules of the Road, is the part that governs how you actually drive: right-of-way, speed, signals, turning, stopping, parking and pedestrians. It runs from section 21000 through section 23336, in thirteen chapters.

Each chapter below opens the official text on the California Legislative Information website, maintained by the state and updated whenever the law changes. We link to it rather than copy it, so what you read is always current.
